That’s why officers are urging residents to take a look at the label on packages of wipes to find out if it may or can’t be flushed, and even when it says it’s secure for the plumbing – proceed with warning.
“These are designed to dissolve in the collection system, but it takes some time for them to break down,” stated Director of Water and Waste Water Utility with the City of Naperville, Jim Holzapfel. “In the mean time they might collect in your sewer lines, in the public system sewer lines and they can cause backups, blockages. So it’s best that these wipes be used and disposed of in the garbage can.”
Once flushed, the wipes can bond collectively and type clogs so highly effective they break metal gear, costing the town an estimated $5,000 a month, or round $60,000 a yr to exchange these elements.
Experts advocate solely flushing rest room paper when attainable and disposing of all different wipes within the rubbish.
